Quick answer
Old Irish Paving & Masonry is a family-owned, licensed and insured paving and masonry contractor serving Middlesex, NJ (Middlesex County) and nearby towns. We install and repair asphalt and paver driveways, patios, walkways, stoops, steps and retaining walls, and provide basement waterproofing and foundation repair. Estimates are free.
We’ve been paving and building in Middlesex County for more than three decades, and Middlesex (Middlesex Borough, near Bound Brook, Green Brook, Dunellen and Piscataway) is part of our regular service area. Middlesex is mostly post-war capes, ranches and split-levels on modest lots, where single-width driveways, front stoops and walkways are reaching the end of their life.
Flat terrain and the borough’s history of flooding along the Green Brook make drainage and basement water control especially important here. That local knowledge shapes every quote we write: how deep to dig, how much base to install, which way water should run, and which materials will look right on your home.
Key facts
Problems we solve
These are the issues we’re called about most in Middlesex and nearby Middlesex County: some are specific to local soils, terrain and housing, others are common across New Jersey.
What you seeWet basements, water against foundations and driveways that hold water after storms.
Why it happensFlat terrain near a flood-prone brook, with high groundwater during heavy storms.
How we fix itRe-pitching driveways and patios away from the house, extending downspouts, and interior drainage with sump pumps and battery backups.
How to prevent itTest sump pumps before storm season and keep drains clear.
What you seeCars parked on the street or lawn, and narrow cracked drives.
Why it happensPost-war lots designed for one car.
How we fix itWidening within borough rules and replacing on a proper base.
How to prevent itAsk us to check the width rules before you plan.
What you seePatches of coating missing from the foundation exterior.
Why it happensAge and moisture on older homes.
How we fix itRemove loose parging and re-parge on a prepared surface, fixing grading so water drains away.
How to prevent itKeep mulch and soil below the parging line.
What you seeCars park on the lawn, doors hit each other, or someone always has to move a car to get out.
Why it happensMany New Jersey driveways were built for one smaller car decades ago.
How we fix itWe widen with matching material on a full-depth base, add a parking pad or turnaround, and check your town’s limits on driveway width and curb cuts.
How to prevent itPlan for the cars you’ll own in ten years, not the ones you have today.
What you seePeople trip on the top or bottom step.
Why it happensSteps settled or were built with inconsistent riser heights.
How we fix itWe rebuild with uniform risers and treads, a proper landing at the door, and railings where needed.
How to prevent itConsistent steps are a safety issue, not just a cosmetic one.
What you seeRainwater runs back to the foundation, the door threshold or the basement window wells.
Why it happensThe patio was built flat or settled near the house, where backfill soil is often loose.
How we fix itWe rebuild with a compacted base and a consistent pitch of about 1/8–1/4″ per foot away from the house, and add a channel drain where needed.
How to prevent itMake pitch and drainage part of the design conversation before anything is built.
Driveways: Many Middlesex homes have narrow, single-car driveways. Widening to fit two cars, replacing cracked concrete with asphalt or pavers, and correcting pitch so water runs to the street are our most common driveway projects here.
Masonry: In Middlesex we rebuild a lot of front stoops and steps, repair foundation walls and parging, and build small retaining walls and planters.
Outdoor living: Compact paver patios that make the most of smaller back yards are popular in Middlesex.

Asphalt and paver driveways, patios, walkways, stoops and steps, retaining walls, concrete, parking lots, repairs and sealcoating, basement waterproofing and foundation repair.
Yes. Along with paving, we provide basement waterproofing and drainage corrections such as regrading, downspout extensions and re-pitching driveways and patios away from the house.
Most asphalt driveways take 1–2 days. Paver driveways and patios usually take 3–7 days depending on size and design.
Regrade the driveway so it pitches away from the garage, or install a trench drain across the driveway in front of the door, piped to a dry well or daylight.
You can, but it rarely looks or performs right next to asphalt or pavers, and many towns limit driveway width. A paved widening on a matching base is the lasting fix.
